Player Pathway News: DC Now Open for Applications
The HHA's Player pathway Group is pleased to announce that applications for the next Development Centre (DC) cycle are now open.
Junior Prime Contacts from clubs and schools have already been asked to create and update their nominations, ensuring that their talented players have the opportunity to join the pathway.
We have already reached out to all players previously involved in the programme to remind them to submit their applications.
What is the Hampshire Player Pathway?
The Hampshire Player Pathway operates the Development Centre (DC), Academy Centre (AC), and Performance Centre (PC) levels of the pathway, providing a structured approach to player development beyond club and school hockey.
.
Development Centre (DC)
The DC is the first step on the Hampshire Player Pathway and is designed for committed and enthusiastic players who aspire to progress their hockey skills further. It is not intended for beginners. Players nominated by their club or school should already demonstrate a higher-than-average grasp of core hockey skills.
Training consists of five sessions for field players, culminating in a match day featuring inter-centre championship matches. Goalkeepers (GKs) receive four specialist training sessions before joining field players for their final session at their preferred centre. On match days, goalkeepers will rotate between goals, receiving support from dedicated GK coaches.
Following the DC, selected players will be invited to attend assessments for the
Hampshire Academy Centre (AC).
Academy Centre (AC)
The AC is the second step in the Hampshire Player Development Pathway. It is open to players nominated from the DC and those who have completed the Hampshire Performance Centre (HPC). Nominated DC players and returning HPC players will be invited to AC assessments, which take place over two sessions.
Assessments are conducted as a whole-group process on the pitch, with multiple coaches evaluating players—especially in the younger age groups, which tend to have larger numbers. The lead coach collaborates with other coaches to select a final squad of 20-25 field players. Goalkeepers are chosen by specialist GK coaches. Past performance and previous participation are not taken into consideration in the selection process.
Performance Centre (PC)
First introduced in 2023, the PC was established in response to the disbanding of England Hockey’s Performance Centres and the introduction of the Talent Academy format. This shift left a gap in opportunities for players seeking further development beyond the AC level.
Players can only be selected for the HPC if nominated by their AC lead coach. The HPC runs concurrently with the DC, meaning these players do not participate in the DC cycle. After completing the HPC, eligible players are automatically invited to the next AC assessments.
